Bright, deep and lively golden yellow.
On the nose, extraordinarily complex: ripe stone fruit (peach, apricot), quince, candied orange peel, beeswax, honey, toasted walnuts and a subtle oxidative background of great elegance.
In the mouth it is dense, oily and with an unusual texture, with a well-integrated and contained acidity, impressive volume and a very long finish with memories of dried fruits, sweet spices and a saline touch.
12 - 14ºC.
Áreas de Montalvo 2020 is one of the most unique and exclusive white wines from Raúl Pérez, the most influential winemaker in Spain. A project that was born in 1997 as a search for an Albariño radically different from the classic profile of Rías Baixas, inspired by the great aging whites of the world.
Made with 100% Albariño grapes from very specific plots of the Salnés Valley with a high proportion of sandy soils (a rarity in Rías Baixas, where granite predominates) that provide natural glycerin and a unique dense, oily texture. Raúl waited five years before marketing the first vintage (2017), to ensure that the wine had the consistency and personality he was looking for.
The production is deliberately minimalist: fermentation and aging for 12 months in used French oak barrels, without batonnage and without racking. Raúl puts the must into the barrel and leaves it for an entire year. This intentional passivity subjects the wine to a gentle natural oxidation that transforms the Albariño: it dulls its youthful sharp acidity and turns it into a dense, deep and eternal texture, with a golden color that has nothing to do with conventional Albariños.
In his own words: "Áreas de Montalvo is one more step, a wine that is based on aging, waiting, maturation. At a time when we live from day to day, this wine represents all the opposite values.".
The production of the 2020 vintage is very limited: just 498 bottles.
