Caiño Tinto is an indigenous red grape variety from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, especially associated with Galicia and northern Portugal.
It is a long-cycle, late-ripening variety that usually retains a pronounced acidity. It produces fresh, aromatic wines with plenty of personality, typically featuring red fruit, floral, herbal, and spicy notes.
In Spain, it can be found especially in Galician wine-growing areas such as Rías Baixas and Ribeiro, among others.
It is characterized by its late ripening and by retaining a high acidity, even when it reaches good maturity. This characteristic is especially interesting in areas with a humid and moderate climate, as it brings tension, freshness, and aging potential to the wines.
Caiño Tinto usually has a relatively long vegetative cycle. It needs good exposure and sufficient time to reach proper maturity. Traditionally, it is found in Galician plots where it coexists with other indigenous varieties.
Its cultivation is not particularly easy, which is one of the reasons it lost acreage over decades to more productive or easier-to-work varieties. The renewed interest in historic Galician varieties has contributed to its recovery.
Caiño Tinto usually produces wines with medium body, high freshness, and a highly aromatic profile. Rather than standing out for concentration or power, it usually stands out for its liveliness and character.
On the nose, fresh red fruits such as raspberry, redcurrant, or cherry may appear, accompanied by floral, vegetal, balsamic, and spicy notes.
On the palate, one of its most recognizable traits is its pronounced acidity. The tannins can provide structure, but the result usually maintains a fresh and lively profile.
